Description
About the game
Legado is a handmade AR fishing game about the butterfly nets of Lake Pátzcuaro, Mexico. Players read the ripples on the water to tell species apart, cast their net where they tap, and learn to let the achoque, an endangered amphibian found only in this lake, swim away.
Every Day of the Dead, the “Night of Souls” scene opens free for everyone: candlelit canoes heading to Janitzio island and marigolds to gather for an ofrenda.
History
From a student playground to a full game
Gustavo Isaac López Núñez was born in Morelia and grew up in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, where Purépecha fishermen have fished with butterfly-shaped nets for centuries. In 2025, that image became a small AR playground that won Apple’s Swift Student Challenge.
The full version keeps the original illustrations and music, and adds a complete game: species with their own behavior, streaks, daily tasks, a logbook with sourced pages about the lake, and a Day of the Dead scene. Lake Pátzcuaro has lost about a quarter of its volume in recent decades; Legado exists so more people know the lake and its tradition.
