The story
A tradition from the lake, carried into augmented reality.
For centuries, Purépecha fishermen on Lake Pátzcuaro fished from their canoes with nets shaped like butterfly wings. Today the nets are mostly seen in demonstrations around Janitzio, but they remain the symbol of the lake.
Legado began as a Swift Student Challenge 2025 winning playground by Gustavo Isaac López Núñez, who was born in Morelia and grew up in Pátzcuaro. The full game turns that image into short fishing runs on a lake you can look around in.

Read the water
Every ripple hides a species: schools of charales, carp, the rare Pátzcuaro whitefish. As the haul goes on, ripples drift and fade faster.
Let the achoque go
The achoque lives only in this lake and is critically endangered. A good fisherman recognizes its ripple and lets it swim away.
Chain your casts
Your net lands where you tap. Catch a whole school in one cast and chain casts into streaks that multiply your points.
A logbook with sources
Three daily tasks open short pages about the lake’s history and the people protecting it today, each with its source.
October 25 – November 4
Night of Souls, free every Day of the Dead.
Fish among candlelit canoes heading to Janitzio, gather marigolds floating on the water and bring them to your ofrenda. The rest of the year, the scene is part of Legado Complete, a single optional purchase that also unlocks Zen Mode.

The lake today
A lake worth knowing.
Lake Pátzcuaro has lost about a quarter of its volume in recent decades, and species like the whitefish and the achoque exist nowhere else. Scientists, lakeside communities and even the Dominican nuns of Pátzcuaro are working to bring it back. Learn about their work:
